The character John is a very intimating and strict headmaster. He has a very short temper and is quick to anger, especially if something is affecting him personally. He has a drinking problem and goes into fits of rage to those who upset him. He is belligerent and no-nonsense. Although he is Boy's father, he wants nothing to do with him, as he is secretly ashamed that he had to give Boy as an infant, due to his alcoholism and the breakdown of his marriage.

The character Boy is very timid and mindful of himself. He is easily scared and very anxious as he is about to have a conversation with his headmaster. The character John is also revealed to be Boy's father at the end of the show, and although Boy knows this he is trying to prove to himself he can be strong. The character has a hidden bravery but it is only shown at the end when he conquers his fear.
