Oprah's announcement that her show may end its 25-season run in 2011 was almost enough to unseat "New Moon" as the top trending topic of the Twitter-Wood feed today. Kevin Nealon and Wil Wheaton both had a opinions on her possible bow out of syndication, while Eli Roth and Kevin Smith helped keep "Twilight" alive in Twitter conversation.

Two big names celebrated birthdays last night in very public fashion, as P. Diddy entertained a few folks on my follow list and Larry King got a little rowdy in my pick for Twitter Pic of the Day. Check that out after the jump along with Jeremy Piven's Calgary Flames trip and Danny DeVito's wholesome moment with Carrie Fisher. I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter-Wood report for November 20, 2009.

'New Moon' Tops Midnight Box Office Record Once Held By 'Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince'

FROM MTV.COM: In "New Moon," Bella is filled with confusion as Edward leaves her, Jacob Black makes his move and the nomad vampires continue to surround Forks. When it comes to Twilighters and the box office, however, there is no such indecision — and the results are already showing in record-setting numbers.

Summit Entertainment is reporting that the "Twilight" sequel opened on Thursday night to an unprecedented $26.3 million during its midnight screenings across the country. The film unspooled on 3,514 screens, playing at 12:01 a.m. for die-hard fans — many of whom arrived at the theaters dressed as their favorite characters.

That total handily beats the midnight-screening record of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." This seems to vindicate "Twilight" star Jackson Rathbone, who famously responded to our question of whether Stephenie Meyer's franchise could take on J.K. Rowling's juggernaut, "I don't know; they've got brooms."

James Franco Makes His 'General Hospital' Debut, And Here's Your Recap

Today's the day! James Franco made his soap debut on "General Hospital" as Franco.

Franco appears to be, on the one hand, an elusive but promising photographer who will show his work at a Crimson magazine gallery event. On the other hand, he makes his first appearance on the show dressed like a homeless person, lurking in the shadows as mobster Sonny Corinthos and his right-hand man Jason Morgan walk into a mob trap that turns violent on Front Street in Port Charles.

Franco witnesses the entire shootout, which leaves Sonny victorious and his rivals down for the count. As Sonny and Jason drive away from the scene of the crime, Franco, with a hoodie hiding his face, waves at the limo, taunting Jason.

I realize some back story might help here. See, earlier this month, this whole thing went down where Sonny's wife Claudia went bonkers, because it finally came out (in a very public way) that she had ordered the hit on Sonny that put his son Michael into a year-long coma. Claudia took Sonny's pregnant ex-wife Carly hostage, and Carly went straight into labor. Into a storm they went, driving down some Port Charles back roads until they finally crashed.

Finding refuge in a cabin deep in the woods, Carly gave birth with Claudia's help. But Claudia didn't need two hostages, so she tried to steal the baby girl. Michael, Carly's oldest son, somehow found them in the nick of time, introducing a bat to Claudia's head, killing her. Everyone has been covering it up since. However, a photo of dead Claudia appeared without explanation at Jason's house, putting everyone's cover-up in jeopardy.

Anyway... Jason saw the homeless guy waving as they drove off, and he's paranoid about the witness.

Franco puts a nearly dead Joey Limbo -- the mobster working for Anthony Zacharra (Claudia's father, by the way), who tried to off Sonny -- out of his misery. Then, he rearranges the body in a perculiar way, flicks a coin on the ground and utters his first line: "keep the change."

Port Charles' finest is called to the scene of the crime, including Lucky Spencer (son of the infamous Luke of Luke and Laura) and commissioner Robert Scorpio. They figure out that Joey didn't die of gunshot wounds, but rather of a foot to the windpipe.

Franco gets home (which is the location of all the scenes that included Adam Lambert's "Mad World" from the past several weeks), talks to a mannequin and calls a mysterious sexy woman telling her he needs her. She comes over and helps shave his beard clean -- tada! -- we finally get a good look at Franco.

Of course, to make a public appearance after the shootout that is now all over the media, Sonny, Jason and crew all decide to go to the Crimson gallery opening.

And a newly clean-shaven Franco leaves the mysterious woman at his house, telling her, "They're expecting me."

This is going to be the best gallery opening EVER!

Nicolas Cage Got Into The Spirit For 'Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans'

FROM MTV.COM: Seventeen years ago, the legendary Harvey Keitel launched the second act of his movie career with a pair of tough-guy instant classics: Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs" and Abel Ferrara's "Bad Lieutenant." A crack-pipe-smoking breath of fresh air, "Lieutenant" predated "The Shield" by a decade in telling the NC-17 story of a junkie, gambler, killer cop on a downward spiral.

During the past year, film buffs have been up in arms over director Werner Herzog's "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans." Starring Nicolas Cage as the type of at-wit's-end madman who puts a gun to an old lady's temple to get information, the flick co-stars Eva Mendes and Val Kilmer and packs one potent surprise: Although it has little to do with Keitel's movie, it is a deranged, worthy successor.

Recently, we caught up with Cage to discuss a return to his over-the-top roots — and the joys of winning over haters like myself.

Judd Apatow Says 'Pineapple Express 2' Likely, 'Superbad 2' Not So Much

by Matt Thompson

Looking for a sequel to the hit summer comedy "Superbad"? Don’t expect to get one anytime soon. The genius producer behind the film, Judd Apatow, revealed as much when he sat down to talk shop with his fans on Funny or Die yesterday. While "Pineapple Express 2" looks like it may hit theaters at some point in the foreseeable future, "Superbad" won’t be getting a sequel.

(Editor's note: I would have embedded the video here, but Judd Apatow is a profane man and the words he uses are too much for members of our reading audience. I welcome you to track it down on the great ship Internets.)

“I can't get [Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg] to make the ‘Superbad’ sequel. I begged, but they don't want to ruin it. They think it's a gem of a movie and they don't want a crappy second," Judd said. He later stated, "There's a little talk about a 'Pineapple Express' sequel if that's your cup of tea... your bowl of smoke. You probably have a better shot of seeing that [than any 'Superbad 2' or any other Apatow sequel]."

Beg more, Judd! We want a sequel! Despite Rogen and Goldberg’s stubbornness on making one, I have to agree that “Superbad” was a crown jewel. Since sequels often turn out way worse than the original, maybe skipping it is best. But surely after a long, thought out process, a screenplay could materialize into something that would be worthwhile to see.

For a movie that made nearly $200 million at the box office and served as a launch pad for the careers of Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Emma Stone, there is surely money to be made. Just make it not suck. Simple.

Personally, I’ve been longing to see what happens to Seth (Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) next. They kind of left us hanging at the end of "Superbad" with questions to be answered about the boys and their love interests. They could Rogen and Goldberg could show us Seth and Evan moseying through their college lives with the infamous McLovin (Mintz-Plasse) tagging along. Upping the stage from high school to college is certainly an idea.

Apatow recently finished off “Get Him to the Greek,” a spin-off of “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” Russell Brand will reprise his role as Aldous Snow while Jonah Hill will be taking on a whole new character, playing a music label intern tasked with escorting Snow to his a LA show.

Oprah's Leap From Series To Network Should Inspire These Five Shows To Follow Her Lead

User is offline

- Today, 01:00 PM - 0 comments

Oprah WinfreyThe Queen of Daytime Television is dethroning herself. On September 9, 2011, Oprah Winfrey will take her last bow as the host of the Oprah Winfrey Show, almost 25 years to the day since the program initially launched.

But Oprah's televised days are far from over, as the media mogul plans on launching the Oprah Winfrey Network — appropriately abbreviated as OWN — in early 2011. Once her show ends, she'll focus much of her energy on the brand new network.

Honestly, it's a pretty brilliant career move. In fact, it's one that several television franchises could probably follow with great success — or, at least, hilarious results. Following Oprah's move from television host to network overlord, I think these five franchises could take a similar leap from series to channel.

THE COPS NETWORK: There are few things in the world more entertaining than watching genuine footage of police officers chasing and shaking down runaway perps, drug dealers and traffic offenders. The one thing that might be more entertaining? Seeing it on the air all the frickin' time. Such would be the case on The Cops Network, which airs nothing but reruns and new installments of "Cops," with the occasional episode of "America's Most Wanted" thrown in for good measure.

THE LAW & ORDER NETWORK: Given all the various incarnations of "Law & Order," it's almost a crime that the franchise doesn't already have its own television network. The constant weekend marathons are proof enough that a network packed to the brim with Chris Meloni, Sam Waterston and the late great Jerry Orbach would have a strong audience. And by a strong audience, I mean myself. Truthfully, I just want more Ice-T on the airwaves.

THE SIMPSONS NETWORK: Can you imagine a television network where Sideshow Bob is beating himself up with rakes or Bleeding Gums Murphy is powerhousing his saxophone from the heavens at any given moment in the day? I can — and it's awesome. With no signs of slowing down, The Simpsons Network could even offer plenty of new installments to go with the reruns. Such a channel would truly be exxxxcellent.

THE STAR TREK NETWORK: Set your phasers to stunning every single day for the rest of your life with The Star Trek Network, a 24/7 smorgasbord of U.S.S. Enterprise-helmed action-adventure — except when we're talking about "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager," that is. Trekkers could tune into this channel to get their daily dose of Klingon language lessons, and the best part of all? No "Enterprise." Even the network chiefs know better than to air that horrid mess.

THE SURVIVOR NETWORK: A television network dedicated to endless outwitting, outplaying and outlasting? Yes, please! The Jeff Probst-hosted reality show has had its ups and downs over the years, but there's still nothing more satisfying than watching a total blindside at Tribal Council or an impressive victory at an Immunity Challenge. If that kind of strategic and physical maneuvering were on television at any given moment during the day, I would be one happy camper. Just imagine the possibilities presented by a live, 24/7 feed into the Survivors' miserable daily existence. It would be glorious.

Name some television shows that should follow Oprah's lead from series to network in the comments section or on Twitter!

FROM MTV.COM: As soon as Robert Pattinson loses one high-profile leading lady, he gains another one for his upcoming film "Bel Ami." Of course, Nicole Kidman was never officially booked for the movie — an offer went out, but a deal was never solidified — but now everyone's favorite "Twilight" vampire is set to star opposite Uma Thurman in the picture, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Bel Ami" is an adaptation of 19th-century French writer Guy de Maupassant's short story of the same name. The plot follows Georges Duroy (Pattinson), a Parisian journalist and notorious ladies' man who overcomes a poverty-stricken childhood to become one of the city's foremost movers and shakers. Thurman is set to play the wife of Duroy's friend who eventually marries him after assisting in his personal and professional rise in French society.

FROM MTV.COM: When "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" was announced for a summer 2011 release, fans went wild. Then the project hit rough waters following the departure of studio chief Dick Cook, a big supporter of "Pirates" star Johnny Depp. The Jack Sparrow actor subsequently expressed hesitation about continuing with the series.

Still, the project sails forward. Depp's not a lock until he signs off on the script, which he hasn't yet seen, but Captain Barbossa actor Geoffrey Rush told MTV in late September that he's been told to keep his schedule open for cameras to roll next spring.

The Cash Money/ Young Money synergy continued recently in Miami. All the family was there: Lil Wayne, Drake, the Birdman, Nicki Minaj, Lil Twist, Lil Chuckee, Mack Maine ... everybody. Wayne and his Young Money camp shot the video for "Bed Rock," while Birdman corralled Drake and Weezy for "4 My Town (Play Ball)," the next single off his album Priceless, due Monday.

"Me, Birdman and Wayne, we got this new song — I guess you could say it's like another 'Money to Blow,' " Drake said on set. "[The] three dudes that brought you the original are coming back, trying to make it just as big. It's cool, man, to come out here and see the classic Cash Money feel. Everything is really big. It's borderline cartoon. All the best things — the best cars, the best-looking women, the lights. It's one of those videos that's fun to do."

Birdman continued to say that while Drake is family, he has his own niche.

"Me and my son been working 20 years, literally. Working with Drake brings a different spark," Birdman said about working with Wayne and Drake. "[Drake's] got a different spark. He's him. He brings him to what we do. It's a different look. It brings something else to it. What I love about him is he does his own thing. He has his own thing with our thing and it makes it bigger. Drizzy!"

On the Birdman's official Twitter page, it was announced that Wayne's Rebirth LP and the Young Money album have both been pushed back to December 22.

Miley Cyrus issued a statement on Friday afternoon (November 20) about the death of Bill Douglas, the driver who died in an early morning accident in Virginia while driving one of Cyrus' tour buses.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Bill 'Uncle Bill' Douglas," reads the statement issued on behalf of the Cyrus family. "Members of our tour are like members of our family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family in the midst of this tragedy. He will truly be missed."

According to a statement released by the Virginia State Police, officials are investigating the crash that occurred on Interstate 85 in Dinwiddle County, Virginia, on Friday morning that took the life of Douglas, 53, who was behind the wheel of one of the four tour buses in Cyrus' entourage. Cyrus was not on that bus, which held nine other crew members who were able to exit the vehicle through the front windshield. Douglas, an Austin, Texas native, died at the scene, according to police.

The bus was ferrying members of the singer's production crew to a Cyrus show in Greensboro, North Carolina, scheduled for Sunday when it ran off the left side of the road, struck an embankment and overturned onto its right side at around 8:15 a.m. Crew member Mary Zilio, 48, a native of Canada, was hurt in the crash and was transported to a local hospital for treatment of undisclosed minor injuries.

Police have not yet determined the cause of the crash. TMZ obtained two 911 calls made from the scene of the accident which seem to indicate that Douglas was suffering from cardiac arrest. Whether his heart failed before or after the accident has yet to be determined.

Cyrus' show in Greensboro on Sunday will go on as scheduled according to a spokesperson.

Matt And Kim Steal Woodies Spotlight With Some Nearly Nude Friends

Duo enlisted people who could sing 'who also happened to look great taking their clothes off' for awards-show performance.
By James Montgomery

Matt and Kim

On a night packed with big-name stars (Leighton Meester, Will.I.Am, Zooey Deschanel, et al) and big-name performances (Death Cab for Cutie, Jack White's the Dead Weather, Rick Ross), it was a frequently nude couple from Brooklyn that managed to steal the spotlight at the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards.

Matt and Kim — they of the clothing-optional "Lessons Learned" video — not only walked away with the Video of the Year Woodie, but they wowed the crowd with an over-the-top performance of the song, one that featured bicycles, bliss and backing vocals provided by a bevy of nearly naked hipsters.

So when we caught up with the dynamic duo at the Woodies, which air December 4 at 10 p.m. on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU, we had to ask them about the performance. Turns out, it was a rather difficult thing to pull off. It seems there's not a lot of professionally trained singers willing to shed their clothes on command.

"We were going to get our friends out there, but our friends can't sing for crap," singer Matt Johnson laughed. "So we got some people to help us out. These were kids who knew how to sing — who also happened to look great taking their clothes off."

"It was a lot harder to do than you'd imagine," drummer Kim Schifino added. "There's not that many people who want to do that."

Luckily, they managed to corral a chorus of kids who were up to the task. And the "Lessons Learned" performance went off without a hitch. The only problem now is — thanks to their Woodies set (and the success of the "Lessons" video) — Matt and Kim find themselves perilously close to being typecast as "that naked band." At least, you'd think it was a problem.

"I can only hope we'll be 'that naked band!' " Johnson enthused. "I always want to take my clothes off. I went to film school, and the only time I get to do film-related things is via Matt and Kim. And I came up with this idea for a video, where Kim and I would take our clothes off in Times Square, and Kim wanted no part of it."

"Not at all," Schifino laughed. "But now it seems inevitable. And that could be a problem. My t--s aren't that big."

Don't miss the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards, airing on December 4 at 10 p.m. on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU!

50 Cent Sees Himself Settling Down With A Family 'At The Right Time'

But for now, he's a certified bachelor, chatting with MTV News about Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry and Megan Fox.

50 Cent gets very domesticated in his video for "Baby by Me." He has a wife (played by Kelly Rowland) and the three kids (triplet boys), and he flips burgers on the grill after a hard day at work.

Fif said the role wasn't too much of a stretch.

"I would actually yell at Kelly," Fif laughed. "I'd be like, 'You don't do nothing right. I told you to have one baby and you had three! You don't do nothing right!' "

Getting more serious, 50 said he seriously thinks about settling down.

"I think it could happen," he said. "You know, it has to be at the right time. I mean, you see Em make a decision to go home. He didn't want to wake up one morning and Hailie be grown. You know, your life in general, you gotta make choices at different points."

Fif is living the life of a bachelor for now. He said the last celebrity woman that made him say, "Damn!," because she looked so good, was his "Home of the Brave" co-star.

"Jessica Biel. Her body is like, 'Wooo-wooo,' " 50 said, making a bottle shape with his hands.

When asked to choose between Biel and Megan Fox, Fif was stumped for a few seconds. "That's a toss-up," he said. "Ummmm ... Megan Fox."

When it came to Fox or Halle Berry, 50 didn't have to think about it. "Halle Berry," he answered without hesitation.

Then came a tough question: Catwoman or Mrs. Smith? "Angelina Jolie?" 50 asked. "Angelina!"

Fif — who did say Halle was his all-time favorite beauty — could not decide between Jolie and Katy Perry.

" Angelina got all those kids from all those different countries," he laughed. "Got a lot to deal with."

'The final scene is extraordinarily emotional, and it leads to a very potent climax,' he tells MTV News.

NEW YORK — Fans pretty much know what they are getting themselves into when they head to theaters to see "New Moon" this weekend. If they have read the book, they have a good idea of how this part of the "Twilight Saga" comes to an end.

Still, director Chris Weitz hopes fans appreciate the way he has decided to craft the "New Moon" finale for the big screen.

"The final scene is extraordinarily emotional, and it leads to a very potent climax," he told MTV News on the red carpet of the NYC screening of "New Moon." "And it's kind of a spoiler, which I hope people won't give away."

The film ends in a specific way, with Bella and Edward sharing a very special moment, and he said the way it appears onscreen was determined very carefully. "Everything about it was planned to reach that ultimate moment," he said.

Weitz was not only excited about the film's ending, but also the way it all came together as a complete piece. He's really hoping Twilighters approve.

"I feel really good about the final product," he said. "I feel it was as close to the final product as I could make it, which was an honest version of the book and something that a fan would appreciate. So it's not made for any particular demographic, except for the reader of the book who really wants to see it visualized."

Check out everything we've got on "The Twilight Saga: New Moon."
